The Only Dumb Questions Are Those Asked By Deadpool

This page contains many of the terms commonly used on Marvel Champions. Due to the potential volume of terms which might ultimately come to be listed on this page, we have opted to sort everything alphabetically, and then place that sorting into a hidden blind. Click on the appropriate button below to reveal the contents of that blind. Utlimately we plan to make this an intellihanced sorting forum. Read more about raptors!

DO I NEED TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT THE MCU TO PARTICIPATE STORYWISE?
No. We use something we refer to as hyper-time, meaning that as stories playout, whatever relevant information you need to know to be able to participate in the storyline will be available. We do try to craft our stories so they are novice freindly and require only the most basic understanding of the MCU such as Spider-Man hangs out in the New York area, and the Thor has the name of a good hairdresser.
DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 'S SITE CANON (HISTORY)?
Not much. As mentioned in various points about , we use a "hyper-continuity" based approach in running interactive stories. Any meaninful game information is front loaded via a news article or two via our version of the Daily Bugle for general consumption by the mmebership. And specific or additional information relating to an event that a character might need to know will appear on your personal dashboard where it is always easily accessible to you, and can be updated as needed by staff. Information shared may redact previous events, situations, or actions which have happened in the past but have been expunged due to those character no longer being in play. We beleive that using a hyper-continuity based approached allows us to help everyone become as engaged as possible — And hey, if Marvel can do it, so can we, right?
ARE THE FOX X-FILMS CONSIDERED CANNON?
Yes and No. We draw on the first two X-Films (X1 2000, X2 2003) for environment and mood, and setup, but not for continuity. Continuity wise, we draw those movies for how the Xaiver Institute looks and functions and little else at this time; The X-Men exist in seculsion and prefer to keep a low profile.
WHAT ARE THE IMAGE DIMENSIONS FOR APPS, POSTS + PROFILES
We use three dimensions through out our site for simplicity. And while mutliple variations of these dimensions are used in various places, the ratios never change. When you upload an image to , our OS will automatically create all the necessary variations and thumbnails for you, convert everything into our webp image standard to reduce the actual size of your image files and speed up download times so the site is faster and more responsive and you spend less time waiting, and deploy these images when and where needed seemless so you can concentrate on roleplaying your characters.

LANDSCAPES: 1280 wide by   626 tall
SPOTLIGHTS: 250 wide by 500 tall
PROFILES: 500 wide by 500 tall

All dimensions given in pixels.
WHAT IS AN INHERENT IMAGE?
An image clearly depicting a specific character from a particular canon or fandom. Generally this applies only to illustrations of the character, but it maybe extended to a photograph of a specific character if their is sufficient makeup or cgi work going on that the actor is not easily recognized. Examples of such Inherent Images would be Groot, who is played by both Vin Diesel, Krystian Godlewski, and Terry Notary to name but a few of the voice actors who breathed life into our favorite plantoid. Also Nebula as portrayed by Karen Gillan, and Christopher Eccleston played Malekith the Accursed in "Thor: The Dark World 2013". Even thier own mothers would be hard pressed to recognize their own children under all of the makeup and cgi.
WHAT TYPES OF CHARACTERS ARE CURRENTLY ALLOWED?
X Characters; We are currently in phase II of our development cycle, at this time we are allowing characters who would fit logically into an X-Men themed site. What this means is while most active characters are mutants, not all characters necessarily need to be mutants, but they do need to make sense as characters regularily appearing at the Xavier Institute. So where the Doctor Hank McCoy (the Beast) makes sense, the Hellfire Club's White Queen, Emma Frost does not. In late February we hope to open the game world up more to include the Avengers and logical extensions of the Avengers and the X-Men as we slowly work towards an Avengers vs X-Men (AvX) like event.
HOW DO I MAKE A CHARACTER?
If you have looked through our site, you've likely noticed that there is no html application template for you to copy and fill out, that is because there is none. Instead of using an html template and expecting you to "code-up" your character, we have created an automated character creation system which is composed of several forms for you to fill out. Each form comes with all the information and tips necessary to help you complete the form so you needn't have to go searching our site (or others) to get your character ready for submission. The forms have many automated features and will take the character details you provide and create your character profile, set your character preferences, and even create character image rotators for you.
  1. Discuss your character with a member of staff.
  2. Once approved, a new character link will appear, both in the main site nav, i.e., the "red ribbon" at the top of the page AND on your personal start page.
  3. Click either the link or the button and the character builder will launch.
  4. Use the character builder to flesh out your application.
You may find some of your character information has already been filled out for you ranging from possible playbys to power descriptions and team relationships, character timeline and more. All of this information is present so that your app can comply with any pre-established character actions and history if the character has been in play before; We're environmentally conscious here and believe in recylcing (data) whenever possible.
  5. Flesh out your character details to the best of your abilities, feel free to use our resource libraries which have descriptions of powers, skills, equipment, and more to assist you in fleshing out your character.

NOTE: If you find a descript you want to add to your character in one of our library resources, you can click on it and it will automatically be added to your character for you to then tailer to more closely reflect the character you are working on.
  6. The character builder will assist you in uploading and managing your character images so that you won' need to find image hosting elsewhere. The builder lists the images sizes so that you will have them on hand when uploading them. out as possibledepending on how other other relevant applications have been completed. If the character has been in play before, the prior character timeline will populate your character application; You can edit the timeline entries so long as they do not require another character app to need revision.
  7. When you are finished fleshing the app out, click the submit form and staff will automatically be notified of the complete app.

NOTE: You can see where your character is in the review process at any time by looking at the character cue available from your user dashboard.
WHAT IS AN INHERENT CHARACTER (IH)?
An inherent character is the same as a Featured Character. An IH is inherently innate to a particular fandom or canon. Examples of ICs include Harry Potter(Potter-verse), Wonderwoman (The DC Extended Universe), and Winnie the Pooh (The 100 Acre-verse).
HOW MANY CHARACTER THREADS CAN I HAVE?
You can have as many threads as you can maintain without causing bottlenecking. So long or characters as you believe you can keep up with. If staff notices you struggling to keep up with what you have we may send you a message about it just to make sure you're ok.
ARE FEATURED/INHERENT CHARACTERS REQUIRED TO USE THE CANONICAL FACECLAIMS?
Yes, with a some exceptions. Some casting such as Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury were right on the money. However others, such as Jeremy Renner missed the mark and we have opted to go with whom Marvel originally wanted to cast Jensen Ackles who was unable to accept the role due to scheduling conflicts with his tv series Super Natural. We try not to involve any meta-reasoning regarding castings and simply look at the character when we ask "Is this a good casting?"
WHY ARE METAHUMANS SO HOT?
The real reason of course is that they supers, myth, they are our modern gods as visualized by artists. By their very nature are hyper-idealized versions of humanity, both in beauty, oddness, or ugliness - their is very little room for "middle of the road". The legacy of this is that the characters movie-star handsome with physiques that surpass olympians, they are like the greek myths, idealized distillations of perfection.

That is the meta of it all, and it is all well and good, but it doesn't really grok with an in-game logic. As an answer to this, we put forth an evolutionary imperitive, much like male birds who are inherently more colorful then the females of thier species, something which gives the most colorful an edge over males when it comes to attracting a mate, mutants, and other meta-types are inherently more appealing, this is a means to help them in their biological imperitive to breed.

Within our version of the MCu, Moira MacTaggert, a leading evolutionary biologist has put forth what has come be to be called "The MacTaggert Papers", a series of articles published in various sceintific and medical journals serving as a modern update and expansion to the evolution observations of Hubert Wyndham (The High Evolutionary), and Edward Darwin - Mutants and other such metas possess an inherent natural physcial symetry, giving them an edge when it comes to to give them an edge in attracting mates. Evolutionary biologists have noted physical symetry as denoted in human proportions serves as a visual"genetic" que signalling the inherent quality of ones genes. This symetry gives Homo Sapien Superior a natural biological edge when it comes to attracting mates and specifies propagation; Physical symetry following the Golden Section gives mutants an unsurmountable biological advantage when it comes to species propagation; They (the mutans) will ultimately breed us (humans) out.

It is this reason which speaks to the the average persons reptile brain causing them to fear these evolutionary next-steps for they mark the their own end. It is the fear of the other lurking in all of us that cause the average person to at first be in awe of us, and then to feel inadequeta, and ultimately to fear that which will end them.
WHY ARE MUTANTS FEARED WHEN OTHER META-HUMANS ARE NOT?
It is the inherent fear of the other, the outsider within, that thier child are something else and that this inherent "otherness" harolds the evolutionary end of homo sapien sapien as a species in favor of the advancement of homo sapien superior. It is the inherent fear of being obsolete, of death incarnate. Just as Homo Sapien, the first "Humans" as we think of Humans went to war with Cro-Magnum Man 10,000 years ago, and won out, extinquishing their speicies so too is it feared that Homo Sapien Superior will do the same to Homo Sapiens Spaien, it is the fear of judgement coming in an ironic repeat of history with Homo Sapien Sapiens being expunged in favor of the evolutions next step; Envy and fear walk hand-in-hand with ignorance and want; No one wants to be remembered as a footnote in a medical text.

How Many Accounts Do I need?
One. In the spirit of simplicity, we have chosen to use OMMMs which among otherthings, allows users to use a single account to manage everything from your characters to your images to your OOC site presence without the need to link accounts or attempt brain surgery. Marvel-Champions is true-single-login site - tehre is no need for account switching or other such work around attempts.
IMAGES DON'T SHOW IN SAFARI (Apple Browser)
We use the webp image compress format for all of our images, this format is not supported by many older browsers. We recommend using Chrome, Firefox, or our personal favorite, Brave. If you are using Safari, it must be the most current version and you may need to enable the webp image format depending on your version of OS X. All other browsers may have limited issues depending on how current they are in adopting web standards. Whatever browser you are using, make sure it is the most current version of that browser for the best web experience period.

HOW ARE ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE CHARACTERS HANDLED?
The short answer is, they are handled on a case-by-case basis. Characters like Miles Morales (Ultimate Spider-Man), Gwen Stacey (Spider-Qwen), and others from the Multiverse such as Loki-gator can exist here so long as their arrival can be logically explained without requiring any other characters to require revision(s). What is important is the character write-up and that the character feels like they are adding something to this universe, not taking away from it.
WHAT IS THE CURRENT GAME DATE?
May 12th, 2014
HOW ARE THE X-MEN MOVIES BEING HANDLED
While none of the X-Men movies are being directly folded into the Marvel Chamnpions Universe, we draw on the tone of the X1 and X2.
HOW ARE THE FANTASTIC FOUR BEING HANDLED
As with the X-Movies, we are not directly folding the Fantastic Four movies into Marvel Champions, but the tenets of their origin are being folded in; THey went up into space, were caught in an unpresidented cosmic storm, gained super powers, survived their crash landing back on earth, and went on to prove themselves as the "Fantastic Four".
HOW ARE THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY BEING HANDLED
Currently, they exist someone where out there, but aren"t part of the active canon list as Marvel-Champions is focused on Earth.
WHATS UP WITH WANDA/PIETRO MAXIMOFF
We are embracing the MCU version of the Maximoffs (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen). Pietro is considered to have been severly injured during the Sokovian Incident (Age of Ultron), but he did not die. He was brought back to the Avengers Tower were Doctor Cho together with help from Doctor Banner and Tony Stark were able to Quicksilver recover from his injuries sustain while saving Hawkeye; They are mutant offspring of Magneto.

OCs are more than welcome! They can be part of any open faction/group
DO THE INFINITY STONES EXIST?
Following the rules of E=MC2, neither enery nor matter can actually be destroyed, they can only change form as exampled with a block of ice left in the Sahara desert mid-day. The ice will turn to water will turn to steam will turn to moisture in the air. Hence the stones exist, in some shape, in some form, somewhere...

WHY WAS I DENIED WHEN I APPLIED FOR A STAFF POSITION?
Staffers on Marvel Champions have to follow very rigid principles and operating procedures, they are here to help and to serve. Those who agree to follow these tenets are allowed to directly help in the development of , both in terms of how it grows, how it is run, and occassionally how it is revised (Rules, Policies, Technology, etc.). If you applied to join staff and were declined it may be due to a lack of need, your ideas or interests may not have been in line with that of staff, your methods for how things should be handled were not a good fit with site principles and proceedures to name but a few reasons. Whatever the reasons, we always appreciate any interest expressed in helping with the running, growing, and prunning of Marvel Champions, and we thank all who express an interest in helping even if we have to decline someone at that time (but don't be surprised if we come knocking on your door at a later date).

We use the webp image compress format for all of our images, this format is not supported by many older browsers. We recommend using Chrome, Firefox, or our personal favorite, Brave. If you are using Safari, it must be the most current version and you may need to enable the webp image format depending on your version of OS X.

We use the webp image compress format for all of our images, this format is not supported by many older browsers. We recommend using Chrome, Firefox, or our personal favorite, Brave. If you are using Safari, it must be the most current version and you may need to enable the webp image format depending on your version of OS X. Whatever browser you are using, make sure it is the most current version of that browser for the best web experience period.

DO I NEED TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT THE MCU TO PARTICIPATE?
Not much. As mentioned in various points about Marvel Champions, we use a "hyper-continuity" based approach in running interactive stories.
