Kentucky: He's Leaving Home

Kentucky: He's Leaving Home (#TiD-77) unknown

SCENE SET »

The house which Sam Guthrie had grown up in was the same which his father and his father's farther had grown up in. All them coal miners, all of them dying young. The house it self, while possessing a certain charm and majestic views was draft and ill heated. The floors creek in places and some of the cupboard doors no long closed properly. The furnishings, again while charming, were a mish mass of pieces purchase or crafted by the Gunthrie's themselves. And give the size of the house, it was surprising how many dwelled within. With the exception of the parents room, the other two bed rooms had bunk beds on either sides of the rooms; Sam actually slept on the couch as he was the "man" of the family and needed his rest to work the mines, and himself into an early death.

The X-men, Sean Cassidy, Piotr Rasputin, Jean Grey, and team lead, Hank McCoy now sat in the parlor of the small home with Sam Guthrie and his mother. She had dismissed Sam's many brothers and sisters for the moment so that they could discuss the Institutes generous proposition: An a possible education for a Guntrie, one which would extend all the way through to his college years; A full ride.

Beast » "Yes ma'am," Hank said in reply to Mrs. Guthrie's question. "The Xavier Institute in general, and Professor Xavier specifically, sees your son doing...great things. From everything we've seen, you've raised a good man here, but...after this afternoon it's going to be very difficult for him to just go on about his life here as if nothing's happened."

He reached out to pat her hand gently. The woman was clearly taking the news that her son was a mutant better than many mothers he'd seen, but it was still a very upsetting adjustment to make. "The institute has helped many, many young people like your son learn host to control our gifts rather than letting those gifts control us. Most of those students have graduated and returned to the lives they led before they first started to show signs of being any different. Some, like myself and my friends here," he motioned to Piotr and Jean, "have chosen to pay that kindness forward by staying to help others learn how to control their powers."

He turned to Sam. "And it isn't just training. You'll have access to resources you can't even imagine yet. The Professor believes that an education is key to success in life. And he is determined to see all of us succeed. We have an extremely challenging academic curriculum, but we also offer a wide variety of other types of life training. We have graduates who are doctors and lawyers, of course, but we also have graduates who are chefs, auto mechanics, and artists. You'll be free to pursue whatever future you choose."

He looked back to his teammates before addressing both Guthries again. They'd decided that full disclosure was the best approach here, well, almost full disclosure anyway. They weren't about to start mentioning the X-Men or any of their more semi-legal actions. "I myself have always had some...physical differences in my appearance. They made going to school like a regular kid difficult. But as I got older, new physical differences began to appear. Ignoring them would have been impossible. That's when the Professor approached my family.

"I wasn't sure I wanted to go to the Institute, either. I didn't want to leave my home, my friends, my parents. But when I did, when I finally went to the Institute just to look around..." Hank paused, remembering that first day at Xavier's. "I didn't have to hide there, didn't have to think about every action I took or every word I spoke. I had no idea how exhausting that had been until I just...stopped." He looked to Mrs. Guthrie, "Sam hasn't had to do that yet, but I'd like to save him from that if I can."

He looked back to his friends. "We all have stories like that to one extent or another. I'm sure they'd be happy to share them with you, or you can just ask us questions. We'll answer anything we can. And you're more than welcome to return with us if you want to have a look at the school for yourself. in fact..." he hated having to bring this up, "if news of Sam's...differences has gotten out, it might be safer for you and your family to come visit for a while. You're all welcome, of course."

Colossus » Piotr nodded.

"I was offered asylum here in this beautiful country and made a citizen. When it was discovered I was a mutant we were attacked and I fled into exile. It has been years and I don't even know if they are still alive. But I have a new family now at the mansion. The students, the teachers. It will become like a second family to Sam as well. A place he can learn about his gift, also go to school and make friends. If you want your family is welcome to look at the place. And visit whenever you wish. It doesn't have to just christmas and summer he gets to see you. We even have extra rooms if you wish to stay a couple days and that way you wouldn't have to get a hotel room." said Piotr.

He smiled at her.

"This offer applies to the rest of your family as well. If you see others manifesting powers later on in your family or in the town you can tell them about us. Some mutants develop their abilities late or remain dormant for so long that they get activated later by stress or other factors." said Piotr.

He looked at the woman before speaking again.

"If your family wishes for Sam to stay we'd leave. Unfortunately others may come and hunt you if Sam doesn't learn how to control his powers. He could hurt himself or others by accident. I almost hurt my father and brother a few times when I was still learning how to use my powers. But I didn't have a school at first. I had to learn by myself and then get help from the Institute when I had no one else to turn you." said Piotr.

Architect » After welcome Sam's new friends into their home, aside from Paige, Sam's slightly younger sister, Mrs. Guthrie was quick to send her other child to their rooms with instruction to stay their until called for. Mrs. Guthrie listened, like Paige, she didn't want Sam to go of course, but given the recent events which had occurred, she couldn't deny the obvious wisdom which had been presented her. In the end of course it was Sam's choice, and he agreed it was likely for the best. He didn't know when he might explode again.

Jean had clouded the mines of the few locals who understood exactly what had happened, but she wouldn't be here the next time. And what if he were to ignite within their house? He might injure one of his fellow family members or worse.

Their was much sadness as he packed his bags. And it took a while to say all their goodbyes, the Guthries were a large family, but by nightfall the last of the goodbyes were said and Sam found himself on a private jet whisking it's way north.

End.
