Kentucky Fields

Kentucky Fields (#TiD-72) unknown

SCENE SET »  Just two years after the first viable amounts of coal was discovered in the United States in 1750, explorer Thomas Walker discovered coal in what would later become Kentucky and used it to heat his camp fire. Although his discovery came in the Eastern Coalfield it would be another 150 years before commercial coal production occurred there. In 1820 the first commercial coal mine in Kentucky opened in the Western Coalfield in Muhlenberg County. Since then, the mines have become the center of everyone's lives; This was god-fearing Trump country, somewhere out their amidst the colorful autumn splendor, a mutant was coming of age.

Professor X had sent a small group X-Men to find that neo before any harm might befall him, or worse before they might cause harm to befall another. The team include the Beast Hank McCoy, the Colossus Piotr Rasputin, and the mutant Jean Grey who was know going by the name of Psyche having dropped the shoulder padded look of Marvel Girl. along with Coronel Mustard, who would hang back, staying with their small VTOL X-Jet which had been landed in a small wooden glen incase an emergency extraction was called for.

Beast » Hank set the autopilot once they'd reached cruising altitude. Piotr was beside him in the co-pilot's seat. Jean was right behind them pouring over the files the Professor had given them. As they leveled off and started streaking towards Kentucky Hank pushed his seat back and swiveled it to face his teammates.

"I'm not pushing the engines, but we should still be there in just a little over an hour." He pulled out his tablet and began going over the files. "Guthrie, Samson," he read out loud. "Goes by Sam apparently. His school records show a fine, respectable student, but it doesn't look like his family would believe we're whisking him away to nurture the next Hawking." He paged through a few more notes.

"He's definitely got some power to him, though. We really need to get him back to the mansion where he can develop safely. How about..." he scrolled a bit more, "we go for an 'athletic scholarship?'" He smiled at the thought. Most parents would like to believe their child is exceptional, so why don't we reinforce that? He has pretty good physicality from what I can see."

Hank's brow knit for a moment as he scrolled back up. "Ah! I should have said they'd like to think their CHILDREN are exceptional. His parents were...fecund. We'll either need to collect DNA samples from them all, which I can't imagine wouldn't look suspicious, or keep an eye on this family. Genetics will out, yes?"

As the X-Men drove through the densely wooded, autumn hued Kentucky countryside, Jean Grey, AKA the newly christen Psyche guided the team to their destination using a the Mini-Cerebro which looked like a wrist watch and her phones GPS. The team was in the nondescript SUV for some fifty minutes or so until the arrived as what appeared to be a newly reopened coal mine. If the cerebro was to be believed, their quarry resided somewhere within those mines.

Colossus » Piotr nodded as hank read off the information.

"This wouldn't be the first family we had to convince. Maybe we should invite the whole family to come visit." said Piotr.

He pauserd about it.

"I don't know if lying is the right way to go. If the boy's developed powers he may have told his family. Or they witnessed it himself. If strangers came to the door offering a scholarship they never heard of they might get suspicious. Or think we're some goverment trying to kill or kidnap their son. We need to do this carefully." said Piotr.

They didn't have to worry about just the townsfolk. But the parents could be a problem if they felt threatened or that something was wrong.

» As they continued to draw closer and closer to the destination, the X-Men, Beast, Colossus, and Psyche, could all see their was a terrible commotion going on at the mine. Psyche was able to sense the nature of the mass panic playing out before their eyes, one of the mines had suffered a partial collapse; Many were assumed dead, but a persistent tapping had suggested that someone, or someones were still alive within the mine.

All the miners had joined the effort to save one of their own. Even as the X-Men stood on a ridge observing, several miners came quickly up from behind them, one of them screaming in a gruff voice for them to get out of the way as the ran past, shovels in hand.

Then, an alarm sounded on the mini-cerebro Jean was wearing, it suggested that whomever the mutant was, and likely they were caught in the commotion of the crowd, they were likely being overwhelmed with anxiety and panic; They were spiking in the way that meant first manifestation.

Beast » Hank nodded in agreement to what Piotr was saying as they approached the coordinates of the emergent mutant. "You're correct, my friend. Lying may not be best. Thank you. We need to have a cover prepared, though. We've seen far too many communities...families turn their own in to the government not to.

"Why don't we go in honest, but not completely honest. Boarding school, special programs, talk it up while we get a feel for the young man. Perhaps we can get him to talk with us alone so we can find out if he or his family even know yet."

They arrived at a ridge looking down on what was clearly a coal mine. A coal mine in obvious distress. As more and more people swept around and past them, Hank narrowed his eyes as he began to survey the scene. They only had a few photographs of young Mister Guthrie, but no one Hank saw quite fit the bill. That's when Jean's alarm started going off. Hank put two and two together.

"I'm afraid our quarry may be inside that mine, and if that's not enough stress to bring about a manifestation, I don't know what is." He looked at himself and the others. They weren't exactly dressed for an adventure. "We don't know what his power is yet, so we'd best start preparing for the unexpected. And," he sighed, "be prepared to pitch in and help. We may end up having to reveal ourselves if it means saving lives."

Psyche » As they approached the ridge, Jean turned to Hank and nodded in agreement, re-enforcing what Piotr had said, "I agree Hank. I think that that is how the Professor would want us to approach the Neo." She paused, her eyes shifted slightly away from where they were travelling towards, her eyes now on Hank, she continued. "That was how the Professor came to my family. Of course back then, no one was reallys sure of who a mutant was... I was just a girl with some issues surrounded by too many questions. My family trusts the Professor - I for one prefer that relationship to the deceptive one Bobby mantains with his own family. He can never has his family come to visit him." Her tone was dissapproving so much as it was sad, sad more for Bobby's family then Bobby himself. Jean had a different sadness set aside just for Bobby.

As they crested the ridge, Jean's eyes drew wide as the firs echoes of the commotion began to reach them; The black smoke was still just starting to rise. Hapstricken, Jean looked at the mini-cerebro on her wrist, it indicated that they were within several miles of the neo, and that the neo they were chasing was about to crest; They were here for the event horizon of the neo's manifestation. As she tried to trianglulate on his location, the mini-cerebro bouncing off of multiple area cell towers she came up with some very alarming readings. He was at most a mile away from them, yet something in the single suggested he was perhaps as much as far as three miles distant from where they stood on the ridge. How was that possible? She showed the readings to Hank immediately; As she did so, she asked aloud, "I was thinking we were going to find a sleepy little town, not a.. a... is that a coal mine down there?"

Listening to Hank's words, Jean suggested, "Why don't the two of you try to make sense of these readings?" Jean said as she handed the watch over to Hank. They were close enough now that a telepath wasn't needed to operate the mini-cerebro. "I can use my telekinesis to help, while the two of you try to figure out where the Gunthrie is. That way our efforts can remain unseen and we won't risk adding further tension to the situation."

Beast » "Alright, Jeanie," Hank said as he took the device from her. "You do what you can without making too much of a scene. If, well, if the X-Men need to make an appearance, we will, but that's definitely a last resort option at the moment."

Hank held up the 'watch' between himself and Piotr so that they could both see it. He ran a few tests and reset it. His brow knit trying to interpret the results. "I'm not sure, either, Jeanie. There are a few possibilities. We could have multiple mutants, but surely the professor would have detected that. It could be a malfunction, though the diagnostics keep coming back green. There could be some sort of interference, either natural or intentional, scattering the signal," his eyes narrowed in thought as his brain shifted gears.

"Or..." Hank felt his stomach clenching with worry for the poor boy they were coming to meet, "this is an honest to god coal mine down there. We make this adjustment in our heads all the time when we go looking for a new mutant someplace like Manhattan, but these hills have lulled us into 2D complacency. I'm afraid young Master Guthrie is about a mile that way," Hank pointed eastward, roughly toward the rising smoke and dust cloud, "and about three miles away," his hand lowered to a sharp angle, pointing toward the ground, "that way."

He looked to his teammates. "I believe our next student is inside that collapsed mine. And if we don't get him out soon, he's going to manifest down there for better or for worse." Considering the emotions and confusion, not to mention the power, involved in most first times, Hank was pretty sure it was going to be for worse. "Ideas?"

Psyche » As Hank spoke to Colossus, the mini-cerebro recorded a spike which marked the young mutant in question as first manifestation; First manifestation was almost always an extreme example of the neo's powers. Seconds later, the a second dust cloud of coal and ash was quickly expelled from the mine along with the hollow echo of an explosion. Eleven, perhaps twelve seconds later, the ground some 500 meters before them began to buckle and bulge.
