Advanced Biology for Beginners

Advanced Biology for Beginners (#TiD-58) unknown

SCENE SET »  Waiting just outside of Biology class for Teddy Altman was Calvin Rankin. Calvin gave a friendly nod of the head as Teddy approached the class. "Hey, are you ok?" Calvin inquired, believing that Teddy looked aggitated, like he could punch someone. Calvin didn't recognize the new teacher. She seemed young and British and had immaculate handwriting.

"Hey, I saved you a seat. Hey, why you mad?" Calvin placed a hand on Teddy shoulder and tried to reassure him. He knew he was new to the school and the new kid was always on display and didn't know his way around but Calvin was a junior too and he would help him out with his last two periods and then they could go to football tryouts together.

"Hey, bud seat next to me. They always assign partners who sit next to each other." Calvin walked in and put his bag on the seat next to him to hold it for Teddy. He knew first day in a school was tough but he hadn't been in the cafeteria when Billy said whatever had set him off.

Chimaera » This was only the second classroom Teddy had tried before finding the right one. He was counting that as a win. Right now, he'd take any small victory he could get. Luckily the school was divided up more or less by subject area. Once he'd figured that out, it had helped his searches. Still, as he entered the classroom, he wouldn't have bee surprised if there were actual cartoon smoke coming out of his ears he was so angry. He struggled to rein it back in. Seeing a friendly face, one that actually seemed to like the idea of Teddy existing, helped a lot.

"Thanks," Teddy sighed as he settled in beside his new friend. "I'm fine. No...I'm not fine, but I will be. I just got into, uh, an argument, I guess. I apparently pissed somebody off by existing. It's not the first time; doubt it'll be the last. I'll get over it."

He pulled the biology book out of his bag. Luckily it was the same one his old school had been using, so he wasn't TOO confused. And besides, biology was one of the classes he really 'got.' "Thanks for holding me a seat, and for letting me vent...and for wanting to team with me." Teddy knew that as 'the new guy' he didn't actually have much 'cool' to bring to the table. Cal was a good person, and perhaps turning into a good friend. Teddy wanted to focus on that, the positives in his life rather than obsess over the things that annoyed him.

Mimic » The classroom filled up quickly as kids walked or ran into the room grabbing a seat. The first days of class were typically filled with conversations about the summer and what people did during their breaks. Vacations, beaches and Summer loves were often the topic of choice and football. The school was a buzz with a new coach and several new candidates. Teddy heard his name being whispered about and it was mostly about his reputation as an athlete in his other school.

"Don't let it bother you whatever it was shall pass," Calvin said as he slipped Teddy the football try out schedule. It had the try out broken down in to sections. General acceptance and then for positions so the coach could see what each player could do against existing players

"So I am going for running back or receiver so what do you think. What position do you want to try for?" Calvin said just before class started. The teacher was a pretty light brown haired British woman who went by the name Simmons and she was especially bright and spoke in a way that sounded both educational and slightly like she was dumbing herself down for the class. There were times that you just didn't understand some of the concepts and then she would gentle switch tactics and everything seemed clear. She was a good talker

Calvin stopped talking about sports and answered some questions in class. He proved himself quite the science nerd and smiled at Teddy a lot which seemed off but he had a great smile which looked mischievously h himself was holding back on what he could talk about biology wise.

"I aced chemistry so advanced Bio is going to be fun," Calvin said as Teddy noticed that Ms. Simmons also had one of those single finger gloves. She walked about class touching some students on the shoulder especially bare skin when possible. She was doing it just like Ms. May.

Chimaera » "I'm not sure what position to go for," Teddy admitted. He actually enjoyed pretty much every one he'd played in the past. "I know I don't necessarily look it, but I'm fast and agile. So receiver and RB could both work. I've got a good arm, but QB is something that usually goes to somebody everybody knows, you know? So that's probably out. I've played defense too. That fast and agile thing, it really helps when you're chasing the other team's receivers and stuff during the game." His smile got a little suggestive, "it helps for chasing them after the game, too."

The teacher began lecturing and wandering up and down the rows of desks and chairs. It was weird to Teddy just how literally hands-on these teachers here were. And so many of them had those little gizmo's on their hands. He wondered if they were laser pointers or maybe some kind of high-tech remote to do stuff like run an overhead or some PowerPoint presentation or something. But when she touched Teddy with it, he felt a definite scrape. One of the great things about his abilities was that he was hyper aware of his own body. It felt like the device almost had teeny tiny little blades on it like that MicroPlane grater his mom used. It was weird. He doubted most people would even notice, though. Weird.

After she passed, he leaned over to Cal. I'm a math and science guy myself. I mean, I like reading and even like writing, but not when it's something like having to get through War and Peace and then do some report on like the use of snow in it or some bullshit., you know? And...what's up with the teachers around here? They're always touching us. It's kinda...weird."

He hadn't put together what the gloves and the scratching ultimately were, but he was at least starting to watch for it. Sherlock Altman was on the case.
