A Day In The Life: Billy Kaplan

A Day In The Life: Billy Kaplan (#TiD-31) Max

SCENE SET »  Brooklyn, a borough of neighborhoods -- more than 30, to be exact. Each is distinct and unique, boasting its own personality. The neighborhoods are as diverse as the people living in them, and all are rich in history. Today, let's call it Thursday, it was a beautiful day in Brooklyn; The sky was blue and crystal clear, the temperature was surprisingly moderate for a summer's day with a gentle breeze rustling through the shade trees which lined the streets.

The streets themselves teemed with life, hotdog vendors on corners, meter maids handing out tickets, kids playing hopscotch, small groceries and convince markets mixed in with chic little boutiques selling everything from custom made jams to rare and exotic handwoven blankets, along with the odd Mobile carrier which seemed to becoming more and more prevent everywhere you looked.

This was the Brooklyn Billy Kaplan knew.

Wiccan » It was a beautiful day, a wonderful day, an amazing day, at least it was if you were Billy Kaplan, sorcerer supreme, and the master of the mystic arts of Elm St., Queens. Of course that was only true if you discounted the old gypsy around the block who did psychic readings, she was pretty good. Billy had been angling to try to get a part time job with her after school cleaning up errant tea leaves or whatever else he might do just to learn whatever he might from here; Billy was completely unaware that she was a complete hoax. Billy believed in here because he wanted to touch magic.

He'd readied himself for school and gathered his two younger brothers to usher out to the school bus stop on his own way to school. As per usual, his foster-brother Tommy Sheppard was still asleep, but Billy knew he'd be in class, and on time per usual, with a cup of Tarbucks for each of them. While Tommy was a jerk, he was also aces in Billy's book. They exchanged their collective goodbyes with the parential units, the father handing off their bagged lunches and giving the same usual speech not to trade them with the other boys and girls.

They all replied with the same daily sigh and collect role of their eyes.

Drs. Kaplan, PhD, (yes botht he mother and the father were both esteemed doctors, one a psychologist, the other a medical doctor) then tussled the two younger boys hair and ushered them out the door with the usual 'you be goods' and words of love and affection. As they walked away, they could hear thier mom scream 'Tommy, get your ass out of bed now!'.

Their parents never used profane language when they were around. Tommy was a different story all together.

On the way to the bus stop, they stopped at a local grocery mart so that the two younger Kaplins could get some gum which they all split to carry them through the day. Billy stood outside waiting on them. They of course also bought a candy bar thinking Billy no the wiser. They were right of course.

While waiting outside, Billy noticed a moving van drive up and double park infront of his house and the house before his own and block the street for the most part. Life in Queen's right?

Billy ushered his brothers to the bus stop, slowing his pace as they approached so that they could appear to have walked to the stop themselves; It gave his younger brothers, the terror twins, a certain caveate of cool with their friends at the bus stop. His brothers of course weren't twins, but they could be pretty terrible when they wanted to in a good natured sort of way.

With them dropped off, Billy hurried to the subway, which arrived just as he did on the subway platform. He wasn't sure how that always seemed to work out for him, but it was just another thing that made school mornings so wonderful to him.

Ben Mallozi » "You go to my school don't you?" Ben said as he spoke to Billy on the subway. He had been scouting around for drug dealer who deal with blue genie but he had no luck finding anyone.

The drug was rampant amongst the kids at his school. It had taken his older brother last year and the cops had no clues who was behind the drug trade. He was sure they would find something but everyone was tight lipped and the police just shut down the investigations because they had no leads.

It was frustrating and he felt helpless. Meeting Billy whom most people treated badly last year was sort of a surprise. He normally didn't talk to Billy but this was his senior year and kids that get Bullied might try drugs to escape their dreary lives.

"Hey, my name is Ben and just saying hello," Ben had once found Billy with bloody nose when he was caught checking out a guy. Ben had come to his rescue and punched the guy out but Billy had left before they could talk. He must have been so scared and yet here he was walking his younger siblings to the subway.

"You know there is a middle school program called Sub buddies and they can meet up with and take the bus to their school. It's safer than the subway," Ben said wanting to be friendly.

Wiccan » "You go to my school don't you?", Billy hear the voice come from his left and slightly behind him as he held onto the handrail; Turning slightly he saw Ben Mallozi, or at least that was who Billy believed the blond to be. "Uhm.. .I don't. Maybe? Your... Mallosue? Mallozu? ... Mallozi?" Billy replied earnestly; In the back of is mind, he was still thinking about what a freaking jerk Teddy Altman was. What a great big huge kind of dreamy in a repulsive sort of way jerk -- Billy did not like that he was kind of attracted to Altman. That was likely what annoyed him the most about the blond.

"Hey, my name is Ben and just saying hello," the young man said. "Oh.. yeah. Cool. Uhm.. Hello back at you," Billy said in a cordial tone.

"You know there is a middle school program called Sub buddies and they can meet up with and take the bus to their school. It's safer than the subway," Ben stated in a manner suggesting he was trying to be helpful. "Yeah. We know of it. I just kind of enjoy helping my little bros out - I'm adopted... so for me, having family, family duties and responsibilities - it's all stuff I never dreamt i'd have a the opportunity to have... so i'm having." Billy said with a quick wink.

Ben Mallozi » "Yeah, I know. My big brother used to take care of me in middle school," Ben said with a bit of melancholy in his voice. He had to return to school so might as well tag along with Billy.

'hey, mind if I hang with you on the way back to school," Ben asked knowing that Billy was picked on last year by bullies. The school frowned on bullying but that really never stopped it from happening.

"I've been looking out for younger kids in our school. Seems there is a problem with kids taking "blue genie" and its a harsh drug," Ben said giving Billy a pamphlet. He had a stash of them in his backpack. Billy could also see the tip of a stun gun in his bag that Ben tried to hide quickly.

Billy remembered the news about Ben's older brother dying over the Summer and that Ben had cradled his brother's body while the paramedics attempted to save his life.
